10 Senior Photography Outfit Tips & Tricks

Senior year only happens once.

It’s a season filled with excitement, big decisions, late-night memories with friends, and all the anticipation of what’s to come. Your senior portraits should feel like a celebration of who you are right now while also creating timeless images you’ll love for years to come.

One of the questions I hear most often is:

“What should I wear for my senior photos?”

The good news? There are no hard and fast rules. The goal is to create a wardrobe that feels like you while giving us plenty of variety throughout your session.

Here are my favorite tips to help you plan outfits that photograph beautifully and showcase your personality.

1. Follow the Three T’s: Trendy, Timeless & True to You

At a minimum, I recommend bringing three different looks.

I call this the Three T’s:

Trendy: Choose an outfit that’s fun, current, and a little bold. This is your chance to play with fashion and accessories.

Timeless: Pick something classic and simple. Neutral colors and clean lines create photographs you’ll still love twenty years from now.

True to You: This may be the most important outfit of all. Wear something that reflects your personality, hobbies, or interests. Your senior session should tell your story.

2. Style from Head to Toe

One of the most overlooked parts of senior sessions isn’t the outfit itself—it’s everything else.

Don’t forget:

  • Shoes
  • Jewelry
  • Undergarments
  • Belts
  • Hair accessories
  • Props

The little details often pull everything together and make an outfit feel complete.

3. Play with Layers

Layers photograph beautifully.

Adding a:

  • Denim jacket
  • Blazer
  • Flannel
  • Cardigan
  • Button-down shirt

can instantly add dimension and variety to your images.

The best part? Removing a layer can make one outfit feel like two completely different looks.

4. Wear What Makes You Feel Confident

This one is huge.

If you’re uncomfortable, it will show in your photographs.

Avoid outfits that:

  • Require constant adjusting
  • Don’t fit properly
  • Feel unlike you
  • Are difficult to move around in

Instead, choose clothing that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and completely yourself.

Confidence is always the best accessory.

5. Dress for the Season

I know those cute summer outfits can be tempting…

But if we’re standing in a snowy field and you’re wearing shorts and a tank top, you’ll probably spend the session thinking about how cold you are.

Choose outfits that make sense for the season and weather.

When you’re comfortable, you can relax and enjoy the experience—which always translates into better photographs.

6. Be Careful with Bright and Neon Colors

Nature is already beautiful all on its own.

Extremely bright neon colors and shades that resemble highlighters can compete with your surroundings and sometimes even reflect onto your skin.

I generally recommend avoiding:

  • Neon green
  • Bright fluorescent yellow
  • Electric orange
  • Super-saturated reds

Instead, opt for colors that complement natural surroundings and allow you to remain the focus of the image.

7. Wear Your Glasses—Just Plan Ahead

If you wear glasses every day, I encourage you to wear them for your session.

Your senior portraits should look like you.

However, a few things to keep in mind:

  • Avoid transition lenses if possible.
  • Consider temporarily removing your lenses to avoid glare if your frames allow.

A little preparation can make a huge difference.

8. Choose Outfits That Work in Every Pose

During your session, I’ll photograph you:

  • Standing
  • Sitting
  • Walking
  • Kneeling
  • Leaning
  • Twirling
  • Laughing

Your outfits should look just as great from every angle.

Before your session, try sitting and moving around in your clothes. Make sure everything feels comfortable and flattering no matter what position you’re in.

9. Be Mindful of Thin Straps

We all love those adorable summer dresses.

However, spaghetti straps and strapless tops can sometimes photograph in ways that aren’t always the most flattering.

If you absolutely love an outfit with thin straps, don’t worry! You can easily elevate the look by adding:

  • A jean jacket
  • A shawl
  • A cardigan
  • A light sweater

These layers add dimension while also giving you more versatility.

10. Bring the Things You Love

Senior sessions should celebrate everything that makes you uniquely you.

If you’re involved in activities, sports, or clubs, bring the gear!

Consider bringing:

  • Sports uniforms
  • Helmets
  • Musical instruments
  • Dance shoes
  • Letter jackets
  • College sweatshirts
  • Cap and gown
  • Art supplies
  • Books
  • Anything meaningful to your story

Props are never required, but they can add personality and help create images that feel authentic to who you are.

Bonus Tip: Have Fun with It!

Some seniors love going all out with props and themes.

Flower bouquets, picnic blankets, vintage bicycles, confetti, sports equipment, and college gear can all make your session feel extra special.

At the end of the day, the best senior session wardrobe isn’t the trendiest outfit or the most expensive dress.

It’s the one that makes you feel like yourself.

Because years from now, these photographs won’t just remind you of what you wore.

They’ll remind you of who you were during one of the most exciting seasons of your life.

So wear the dress. Bring the jersey. Pack the letter jacket. Show off your hobbies.

And most importantly…

Come ready to celebrate you.
