Can Our Dog Be in Our Family Photos? Absolutely!

One of the questions I hear all the time is:

“Can our dog be in our family photos?”

My answer is always the same:

Absolutely, yes!

I am a pet-friendly photographer, and I absolutely love when families include their furry family members in their sessions. After all, dogs aren’t “just pets.” They’re our adventure buddies, cuddle companions, professional crumb cleaners, and beloved members of the family. They deserve to be part of your story, too.

That said, bringing your pup along does require a little extra planning. Here are a few tips to help make your session smooth, stress-free, and fun for everyone—including your four-legged friend.

Bring an Extra Set of Hands

This is my number one tip.

I highly recommend bringing along a family member, friend, or dog sitter who can help with your pup throughout the session.

While we’ll absolutely capture beautiful photos with your dog, you’ll also want a variety of images featuring just your family. Plus, dogs can get tired, excited, distracted, or simply need a little break—just like kids do.

Having someone there to hold the leash between photos allows everyone to relax and makes the entire session flow much more smoothly.

Don’t Forget Treats and Toys

Every good dog deserves payment for a job well done.

Treats, squeaky toys, favorite balls, or beloved stuffed animals can be incredibly helpful for getting your pup’s attention and encouraging those adorable head tilts and alert expressions.

And let’s be honest—sometimes a little bribery works wonders.

Keep Leashes and Accessories Simple

Simple, neutral leashes and collars tend to photograph best because they keep the focus where it belongs—on your family and your connection.

However, safety always comes first.

If your dog is most comfortable or secure in a harness, absolutely keep them in it. I’d much rather have a happy, safe pup than worry about a perfect leash.

Burn Off a Little Energy First

If your dog is known for having endless energy, a little exercise beforehand can go a long way.

Consider:

  • Taking a walk
  • Playing fetch
  • Spending a little extra time outdoors before your session

It’s also helpful to arrive a few minutes early so your pup can sniff around, become familiar with the environment, and settle in.

A relaxed dog often leads to a relaxed photo session.

Let Your Photographer Know Ahead of Time

I always love when dogs join us, but it’s important to let me know beforehand.

Since my sessions take place in various indoor and outdoor locations, we’ll want to confirm that your chosen venue is pet-friendly before your session day. Nobody likes surprises—especially the kind that involve a disappointed puppy.

A little planning ensures everything goes smoothly.

Dress Up Your Pup

Why should humans have all the fun?

Adding a few simple accessories can make your session even more playful and personal.

Some of my favorites include:

  • Bandanas
  • Bow ties
  • Floral collars
  • Flower crowns
  • Seasonal accessories

A small touch can add personality and make your images even more memorable.

A Special Note About Newborn Sessions

If you’re planning to include your dog in a newborn session, safety is my absolute top priority.

Some dogs are naturally calm and gentle around babies, while others become very excited or curious around their newest family member. Every dog is different.

If your pup tends to be energetic, anxious, or overly enthusiastic, it may not be the best idea to place them directly beside your newborn.

And that’s okay.

There are still many beautiful ways to include your furry family member safely. Sometimes the sweetest images happen with baby snuggled in mom or dad’s arms while your dog sits nearby, proudly keeping watch.

The goal is always the same: beautiful memories created in a way that keeps everyone safe and comfortable.

Most Importantly…

Don’t leave your fur baby out simply because you’re worried they won’t be perfect.

Dogs don’t have to sit perfectly, look at the camera the entire time, or follow every command to create meaningful photographs. Some of the most treasured images happen during the in-between moments—the curious sniffs, the wagging tails, and the way your dog naturally leans into the people they love most.

Because years from now, you’ll be so glad you included every member of your family—even the ones with paws.
