Mom, It’s Your Turn: How to Feel Beautiful and Confident During Your Family Photo Session

Let’s be honest…

Most of us book family photos because of our kids.

They’re growing too fast, they’re unbelievably cute, and we want to freeze this season of life before it slips away. We want photographs of their toothy grins, their tiny hands in ours, and all those little details we know we’ll someday miss.

But can we also admit something else?

We want to look good too.

And you know what? You deserve to.

As moms, we spend so much of our time making sure everyone else is fed, dressed, comfortable, and cared for that we often forget about ourselves. Family photos are one of the few occasions where you’re intentionally stepping into the frame, and I want you to feel beautiful, relaxed, and confident while you’re there.

Here are some of my favorite tips to help you look and feel your very best.

1. Take Care of YOU First

This may be my number one piece of advice.

Moms are experts at putting themselves last.

But let this be your excuse to do something for yourself.

Think of your photo session as a little celebration.

A few ideas:

  • Let the kiddos stay at Grandma and Grandpa’s the night before so you can get a full night’s sleep.
  • Leave work a little early if possible and give yourself time to recharge.
  • Schedule a blowout appointment (bonus points if they have a flexible rescheduling policy in case Mother Nature has other plans).
  • Treat yourself to a manicure or pedicure.

A little pampering goes a long way.

When you feel cared for, it shows.

2. Choose Clothing That’s Comfortable and Flattering

The most beautiful outfit is the one that makes you feel amazing.

Before your session, try your outfit on well in advance. Don’t just stand in front of the mirror.

Sit down.

Squat.

Twirl.

Raise your arms.

Have someone snap a few quick pictures from different angles.

We often buy clothing based on one favorite angle, forgetting that family sessions involve lots of movement.

Wear Something That Makes You Feel Good

This is huge.

Choose clothing that:

  • Moves comfortably
  • Keeps you seasonally comfortable
  • Doesn’t require constant adjusting
  • Makes you feel like yourself

Confidence photographs beautifully.

Think Balance

Generally speaking:

  • Flowy tops pair beautifully with fitted jeans.
  • Fitted tops pair wonderfully with flowing skirts.

A little balance creates beautiful movement and flattering silhouettes.

Don’t Forget Accessories

Accessories can elevate an entire outfit.

Consider adding:

  • Hats
  • Jewelry
  • Belts
  • Cardigans
  • Jean jackets
  • Scarves

These little details can add texture and personality to your photographs.

A Few Things to Avoid

While there are certainly no hard rules, I typically recommend steering away from:

  • Neon colors
  • Overly busy patterns
  • Extremely baggy clothing
  • Clothing that’s uncomfortably tight
  • Cheap, flimsy fabrics
  • Shoes that sink into grassy locations
  • Low-cut tops that require constant adjusting

Most importantly, wear something you can comfortably move and snuggle in.

Because trust me—you’ll be doing plenty of snuggling.

3. Drink Plenty of Water

Hydration is one of the simplest beauty tricks out there.

In the week leading up to your session, try increasing your water intake and staying well hydrated.

Not only does it help your skin look fresh and healthy, but many people find it also helps minimize bloating and leaves them feeling their best.

Healthy, hydrated skin has a beautiful natural glow.

And who doesn’t love a little extra glow?

4. Eat Before Your Session

This tip applies to everyone.

Especially toddlers.

And husbands.

(Husbands and toddlers can be surprisingly similar when they’re hungry.)

A full tummy generally means:

  • More patience
  • Better moods
  • More energy
  • Happier smiles

Trust me on this one.

Nobody enjoys family photos when they’re hangry.

5. Be Prepared

Preparation has a magical way of lowering stress levels.

And when you’re less stressed, you naturally feel more relaxed and confident.

I recommend bringing:

Touch-Up Essentials

  • Lipstick or gloss
  • Hairbrush
  • Powder
  • Bobby pins

Snacks

Bring a few non-messy snacks just in case.

One little tip?

Don’t tell the kids about them ahead of time.

Sometimes knowing the snacks exist becomes all they can think about.

Save those for emergency situations.

Comfortable Walking Shoes

Some of my favorite locations require a short walk.

Bring comfortable shoes and change into your cute shoes when it’s time for photos.

Extra Clothing

Kids are wonderful.

Kids are also magnets for dirt.

An extra outfit can save the day.

A Towel

Because somehow, children always find the mud.

Always.

6. Know Your Angles

This question almost always comes from moms:

“How do I pose to look my best?”

First of all—don’t worry.

That’s my job.

I will guide you every step of the way.

But if you’d like a few simple tricks beforehand, here are some of my favorites:

Turn Your Body Slightly

Instead of standing straight toward the camera, angle your body slightly to one side and place your weight on your back leg.

This creates beautiful shape and a natural stance.

Face the Camera with Your Eyes

While your body is angled, keep your face turned toward the camera.

This helps create a flattering, engaging portrait.

Lean Slightly Forward

A tiny lean forward feels inviting and naturally elongates your posture.

Chin Forward and Slightly Down

I promise this one works.

Gently bring your chin forward and slightly downward.

This helps define your jawline and avoids the appearance of a double chin.

Keep Your Arms Away from Your Body

Avoid pressing your arms flat against your sides.

A slight bend or softly placing your hands in your pockets creates shape and helps you look relaxed and natural.

Most Importantly… Be in the Photos

One day, your children won’t care whether your hair was perfect.

They won’t notice if you had an extra five pounds or if your dress wasn’t exactly what Pinterest recommended.

They’ll see you.

The way you looked at them.

The way you held them.

The way you laughed together.

The way you loved them.

So take care of yourself. Wear something that makes you feel beautiful. Get the manicure. Drink the water. Brush your hair.

And then step into the frame.

Because you deserve to be remembered in these moments too.
