How to Style a Girl’s Photo Session
One of my absolute favorite parts of planning a child’s photo session is seeing the outfits moms put together. There is something so fun about choosing little dresses, adorable accessories, and pieces that perfectly showcase your child’s personality.
Recently, I photographed the sweetest little girl who absolutely stole the show. She gave us every expression imaginable—from serious little model poses to the cheesiest grins and giggles. Honestly, it was the perfect reminder that kids don’t have to be perfectly posed to create beautiful photographs. Their personalities are what make the magic happen.
Her mom did an incredible job styling her session, and it inspired me to share a few tips for creating outfits that photograph beautifully.
Start with a Color Theme
One of the easiest ways to create cohesive outfits is to choose one color palette and build around it.
For this session, Mom chose pink as her main theme and then incorporated different pieces that complemented one another perfectly.
Having a consistent color palette creates variety without making the outfits feel disconnected. It also allows your gallery to feel beautifully cohesive from beginning to end.
Some lovely color palettes to consider include:
- Soft pinks and creams
- Sage and neutrals
- Dusty blues and whites
- Warm earth tones
- Lavender and soft gray
Keeping your colors coordinated creates timeless images that won’t feel overly trendy years from now.
Don’t Be Afraid of Denim
If there’s one thing I always recommend, it’s denim.
Denim is one of the easiest ways to add texture and interest to an outfit.
Think:
- Jean jackets
- Denim vests
- Overalls
- Denim skirts
Denim works beautifully because it can soften busy patterns while also adding personality to simpler outfits.
It also layers incredibly well and photographs beautifully in both urban and outdoor settings.
Layers Add Interest
One simple trick that can completely elevate an outfit is layering.
A vest, cardigan, jacket, or overalls can instantly transform an outfit and create visual interest in your photographs.
Layers also add dimension and movement, helping your images feel more styled and intentional.
One little note from experience: bulky layers are often best for older babies and children who are comfortably sitting or walking. For younger babies who aren’t yet mobile, some heavier pieces can bunch around the face and make them look uncomfortable.
As with everything, comfort always comes first.
Accessories Are the Cherry on Top
The smallest details often make the biggest impact.
Some of my favorite accessories include:
- Hair bows
- Floral headbands
- Cute boots
- Hats
- Knee-high socks
- Suspenders
- Delicate jewelry for older girls
Accessories help tell your child’s story and can make an outfit feel extra special.
And honestly? Tiny boots and oversized bows might just have a special place in my photographer heart.
Let Their Personality Shine
As much as I love beautiful outfits, my favorite sessions are the ones that truly reflect who your child is.
Is your little girl adventurous? Maybe she’s happiest in overalls and boots.
Does she love all things girly? Bring the twirly dress and giant bow.
Is she shy and sweet? Soft, cozy textures may fit her personality perfectly.
The best outfits are always the ones that make your child feel comfortable, confident, and like themselves.
Most Importantly… Keep It Fun
I know it can be easy to get caught up in Pinterest boards and perfectly curated outfit ideas.
But here’s my little secret:
The smiles, the giggles, the silly faces, and the way your child lights up when they’re comfortable are what truly make photographs beautiful.
The outfits are simply the icing on the cake.
So pick colors you love, add some denim, throw in a few adorable accessories, and don’t be afraid to let your little one’s personality shine.
And if you ever need help deciding what to wear, don’t hesitate to ask.
I could happily talk about kids’ outfits and photo session styling all day long!
