What Should I Bring to My Child’s Photo Session? A Mom’s Survival Guide
We all have big dreams for our photo sessions.
You know the ones—the perfectly coordinated outfits, the golden sunset, the smiling children looking lovingly at the camera as if they just stepped out of a Pinterest board.
And then reality happens.
Your adorable two-year-old has the meltdown. You know the one. The dramatic, full-body, “my sock feels weird” kind of meltdown. Or maybe your sweet six-month-old waits until everyone is dressed and ready to go before spitting up right down the front of their outfit.
We’ve all been there. Deep breaths, mama.
The good news? The most beautiful photos often happen in between the chaos. And with a little preparation, your session can be a whole lot smoother and a lot less stressful.
Here are five things that other moms have found incredibly helpful to bring to their child’s photo session:
1. Wipes, Wipes, and More Wipes
Sticky fingers, runny noses, mystery dirt, snack crumbs—children have a magical ability to get messy at exactly the wrong moment. A pack of wipes can be a lifesaver and quickly rescue a photo-ready face.
2. Small Snacks
A tiny snack can work wonders for little moods and attention spans.
Think small and simple: Cheerios, puffs, or our personal favorite—SMARTIES! They’re tiny, easy to hand out one at a time, and one little package can last an entire session. We do recommend avoiding chocolate or brightly colored snacks that could leave colorful evidence around little mouths.
3. A Favorite Toy… Hidden Until Needed
This one can be a game changer.
For some children, their favorite stuffed animal or toy brings comfort and helps them relax. For others, it can become the only thing they care about for the next hour. If you decide to bring a favorite toy, keep it tucked away and only bring it out if needed. Think of it as your secret emergency tool.
4. A Back-Up Outfit
Because… kids.
Spit-up happens. Juice spills happen. Mud puddles somehow appear out of nowhere. Having an extra outfit in the car can turn a potential disaster into a simple wardrobe change.
5. Their Favorite Music
Music is pure magic.
A favorite song on your phone or tablet can instantly turn tears into smiles and transform shy kiddos into tiny dancers. Don’t be surprised if we end up singing along right beside you!
Remember This…
Perfect isn’t the goal.
Children are wonderfully unpredictable, beautifully expressive, and delightfully messy. Sometimes the giggles happen after the tears. Sometimes the candid moments become your favorite images. And sometimes the photo you never planned for ends up being the one you frame on your wall.
So pack the wipes, toss a few snacks in your bag, and bring your sense of humor.
We’ll take care of the rest.
