How to Prepare for Your Senior Photo Session: Simple Tips for Looking and Feeling Your Best

Your photo session is almost here! The outfits are picked, the excitement is building, and before you know it, you’ll be in front of the camera creating memories you’ll cherish for years to come.

The good news? Looking your best doesn’t require perfection. A little preparation goes a long way in helping you feel confident, comfortable, and camera-ready. Here are some of my favorite tips to help your session go as smoothly as possible.

Schedule Haircuts Ahead of Time

Thinking about a fresh haircut or trim before your session? Wonderful! Just don’t wait until the last minute.

I recommend scheduling haircuts and color appointments at least two weeks before your session. This allows your hair time to settle naturally and gives you a chance to make adjustments if needed. Freshly cut hair often looks best after it’s had a little time to relax and “live in.”

Drink Plenty of Water

Hydrated skin is happy skin.

In the days leading up to your session, try to drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated helps your skin look fresh, healthy, and radiant—which photographs beautifully.

Think of it as giving your natural glow a little extra boost.

Leave Those Blemishes Alone

I know it’s tempting.

A little breakout appears right before picture day and suddenly we feel the need to “fix” it ourselves. But picking at blemishes often causes more redness and irritation.

The best solution? Leave it alone.

I can easily edit temporary blemishes from your favorite images, so don’t stress over an unexpected visitor on picture day.

Go Easy on the Sunless Tanning

A little color can be lovely, but less is definitely more.

Heavy spray tans can often photograph orange or unevenly. If you’d like a subtle glow, I recommend using a light layer of a gradual self-tanner, such as Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun Sunless Tanning Mousse.

The goal is simply to look like yourself—just with a little sun-kissed warmth.

Keep Clothing on Hangers

Wrinkles and creases have a sneaky way of showing up in photographs.

To help your outfits stay fresh and polished, keep them hanging until it’s time to get dressed. It’s a simple step that can make a big difference.

Create a Photo Day Prep Kit

Having a few essentials on hand can save the day.

I recommend putting together a small bag that includes:

  • Deodorant
  • Chapstick
  • Lotion
  • Q-tips for makeup touch-ups
  • Bobby pins and hair ties
  • Hair spray
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Mirror
  • Makeup essentials
  • Any personal “must-have” items

Think of it as your little emergency kit for picture-perfect confidence.

Don’t Forget About Undergarments

One of the easiest ways to avoid wardrobe mishaps is to pack the right undergarments.

A good rule of thumb:

  • Nude bras for light-colored tops
  • Black bras for dark-colored tops

It may seem like a small detail, but it makes a huge difference.

Plan Ahead

The night before your session, lay everything out.

Gather your outfits, accessories, shoes, jewelry, and any props you plan to bring. This gives you time to make any last-minute adjustments and helps eliminate unnecessary stress on session day.

Trust me—future you will be thankful.

Think About Your Glasses

If you wear glasses and would love them in your photos, consider whether glare might be an issue.

For some clients, removing the lenses beforehand works wonderfully and creates the appearance of wearing glasses without reflections. If that’s not possible, don’t worry! We’ll work together to minimize glare as much as we can.

Choose Timeless and Comfortable Outfits

Most importantly, wear something that feels like you.

Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident. Avoid clothing that’s overly trendy or something you wouldn’t normally wear. Timeless styles tend to age beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs—on you.

Years from now, you’ll want to remember how you looked and felt during this season of life, not simply what was fashionable at the moment.

Most of All… Relax

Your photo session isn’t about perfection.

It’s about preserving a moment in time. It’s about laughter, connection, and celebrating who you are right now.

Come prepared, trust the process, and let yourself enjoy the experience.

The most beautiful photographs happen when you’re simply being yourself.
