How to Choose the Right Photographer for Your Family
Choosing a photographer can feel a little overwhelming.
After all, you’re not simply hiring someone to take pictures. You’re trusting someone to preserve your memories, capture your personalities, and freeze a season of life that you’ll never get back.
And let’s be honest—being on the receiving end of a camera can feel awkward. Most of us don’t know exactly what to do with our hands, where to look, or how to stand without feeling a little silly.
As someone who has spent plenty of time on both sides of the camera, I completely understand.
The good news? Finding the right photographer doesn’t have to be complicated.
Here are a few things I encourage every family to consider when choosing the person who will tell their story.
Find Someone You Truly Vibe With
This is my number one piece of advice.
Your photographer should feel like someone you’d enjoy spending an hour with.
The right photographer will make you feel comfortable, help you relax, gently guide you through posing, and maybe even make you laugh a little. They should create an environment where you feel free to be yourself.
Because the truth is, the best photographs happen when you’re relaxed enough to forget there’s even a camera nearby.
A connection matters.
If you feel comfortable with your photographer, it shows in every image.
Make Sure Their Style Matches Your Vision
Every photographer sees the world a little differently.
Some photographers create bright and vibrant images full of bold colors. Others gravitate toward soft, airy photographs. Some embrace rich, earthy tones, while others prefer a moody or vintage aesthetic.
None of these styles are wrong—they’re simply different.
That’s why it’s so important to spend time looking through a photographer’s portfolio before booking. Ask yourself:
Can I imagine these photos hanging in my home?
If the answer is yes, you’re probably on the right track.
Choose a photographer whose work already feels like the vision you have in mind.
Prioritize the Investment, Not Just the Price
We’ve all seen the advertisements.
“Three hours of coverage, 1,500 photos, unlimited outfit changes, and maybe a unicorn for $10.”
As tempting as bargain shopping can be, photographs are one of the few investments that become more valuable with time.
The real question isn’t:
How inexpensive is it?
The real question is:
Will I love these photographs years from now?
When choosing a photographer, try not to focus solely on price. Instead, look for someone whose work genuinely moves you, whose images make you feel something, and who has a reputation for providing an exceptional experience.
Read reviews. Browse their website. Look at their social media. Pay attention to how they communicate and care for their clients.
Because you’re not simply paying for photographs.
You’re investing in:
- Their experience
- Their artistic vision
- Their time and preparation
- Their expertise
- Their attention to detail
- The memories you’ll hold onto for decades
Some investments are simply worth making.
Quality Will Always Beat Quantity
This one might surprise you.
I still cringe when I look back at some of the galleries I delivered when I first started photographing over sixteen years ago.
Those galleries were filled with duplicates, awkward smiles, and images that probably should have stayed on my computer.
At the time, I thought giving my clients more photos meant I was providing better service.
I was wrong.
Nobody wants hundreds of mediocre images.
I’d much rather deliver fifty beautiful photographs than two hundred average ones.
Because more photos don’t necessarily mean better memories.
A carefully curated gallery filled with meaningful, genuine moments will always be far more valuable than endless duplicates.
Quality over quantity wins every single time.
Professional Photographers Have Systems and Guidelines
This one isn’t glamorous, but it’s incredibly important.
A great photographer doesn’t simply create beautiful images. They also run a professional, organized business.
Experienced photographers have:
- Clear communication
- Written contracts and policies
- Defined workflows
- Organized booking processes
- Expectations that are communicated upfront
Believe it or not, these things don’t just protect the photographer—they protect you, too.
Having procedures in place ensures every client receives the same thoughtful experience and eliminates surprises along the way.
Professionalism creates confidence and peace of mind.
And that’s a wonderful thing when you’re trusting someone with your memories.
So… How Do You Find the Right Photographer?
Start with their website.
Browse their social media.
Read their reviews.
Look through their portfolio.
Most importantly, ask yourself:
Can I picture myself laughing with this person? Do I trust them with my memories? Does their work make me feel something?
If the answer is yes, you’ve probably found your photographer.
Because at the end of the day, photography isn’t really about cameras, fancy equipment, or hundreds of images.
It’s about connection.
It’s about preserving the people you love in this exact season of life.
And finding the photographer who feels like the perfect fit often makes all the difference.
