Why Do Newborns Sleep During Their Newborn Photos?

If you’ve ever looked through posed newborn galleries, you’ve probably noticed something:

The babies are almost always asleep.

Naturally, one of the questions I hear most often from parents is:

“Does my baby have to sleep for their newborn photos?”

The short answer?

Not entirely.

If your baby is awake and calm, I absolutely love capturing a few images of those bright eyes and curious little expressions. Those moments are incredibly sweet and often become favorites in the gallery.

However, for the majority of a posed newborn session, we hope for a sleepy, relaxed baby—and there are several very good reasons why.

Newborns Are Naturally Sleepy

Believe it or not, during those first couple of weeks, babies actually spend more time asleep than awake.

I know… as a sleep-deprived parent, that statement may feel impossible to believe.

But newborns, especially between 7 and 10 days old, are generally at their sleepiest during this stage. Aside from needing cuddles, feedings, or diaper changes, they spend much of their time peacefully snoozing.

And that sleepiness is exactly what allows us to create those soft, cozy, curled-up portraits that parents love.

Most Awake Babies Aren’t Relaxed Enough for Posed Photos

Every baby is wonderfully different.

Some newborns are perfectly content lying peacefully while awake. Others have big opinions about the whole experience.

Most awake newborns are busy:

  • Stretching
  • Wiggling
  • Rooting for food
  • Arching their backs
  • Flailing their little arms and legs
  • Making wonderfully adorable—but occasionally awkward—facial expressions

And honestly? That’s completely normal.

They’re simply learning how to be in the world.

While those awake moments are precious, they don’t typically lend themselves to the sleepy, squishy poses often associated with posed newborn photography.

Some Poses Aren’t Safe for Awake Babies

Safety will always be my number one priority.

There are certain poses that are only attempted when babies are deeply asleep and fully relaxed.

For example, while on their tummy, an awake baby may unexpectedly push with their feet, startle, or suddenly wiggle in ways that could make a pose unsafe.

Even though I never step away from a baby and always work with careful spotting and support, I don’t take chances.

If a pose isn’t safe, we simply don’t do it.

Every single image is created with your baby’s comfort and well-being at the forefront.

Awake Babies Are Surprisingly Strong and Wiggly

Newborns have a strong startle reflex.

You’ve probably seen it at home—the sudden stretches, little jumps, and flailing arms that seem to appear out of nowhere.

These reflexes make it nearly impossible for babies to comfortably hold those curled, snuggly poses while awake.

Even poses that would otherwise be perfectly safe often last only a split second before baby decides they’d rather stretch, yawn, or wiggle somewhere else.

Sleep allows babies to fully relax and settle naturally into comfortable positions.

We Can Capture More Variety When Baby Is Sleeping

A sleepy baby typically means more variety in your final gallery.

When babies are deeply relaxed, I’m able to safely and gently transition between different setups and poses while keeping the session calm and comfortable.

Sleepy babies are less likely to:

  • Clench their fists
  • Root for food
  • Startle themselves awake
  • Become overstimulated
  • Wiggle out of poses

This allows us to create a beautiful collection of images that capture all of those tiny details and sweet newborn moments.

But What If My Baby Doesn’t Sleep?

First of all…

Please don’t panic.

Newborn sessions are intentionally designed to move slowly.

Although my typical posed newborn sessions last around an hour and a half, we’re not actively photographing the entire time.

A large portion of the session is dedicated to:

  • Feeding baby
  • Changing baby
  • Snuggling baby
  • Soothing baby
  • Rocking baby to sleep

We work entirely on your newborn’s schedule.

Because of this, it’s actually very rare for a newborn not to sleep at all during their session.

And If Baby Simply Isn’t Having It?

On very rare occasions, a baby may remain unsettled or particularly fussy throughout the session.

If that happens, that’s okay.

Your baby’s happiness and safety are far more important than any particular pose.

Sometimes that may mean:

  • Taking extra breaks
  • Changing our plans
  • Focusing on simpler poses
  • Creating more natural, lifestyle-inspired images
  • Rescheduling if necessary

Whatever happens, we’ll adapt.

Because while posed portraits are beautiful, my true goal is much bigger than achieving a certain image.

My goal is to create meaningful photographs that celebrate your baby’s very first days and preserve this incredibly fleeting season of life.

Most Importantly…

Perfect poses aren’t what make newborn photographs special.

It’s the tiny details.

The sleepy stretches.

The wrinkly toes.

The little fingers curled around yours.

The way your baby fits perfectly in your arms.

Whether your little one sleeps through the entire session or decides to stay awake and take it all in, we’ll create beautiful memories together.

Because your baby doesn’t have to be perfect.

They simply have to be exactly who they are.
